A Night in Jazz

by Ashley Slupski

We are panthers
in zoom zoom cars
lounging in smoky
blue bars, bending
harmonica notes with
our finger tips, leaping
in and out of street
lights, passing joints,
passing time, beating
our bodies against
rib caged women
with too big hearts
in too small chests.
We stagger through
smooth silk star
songs.

We are panthers
hopping train fences
with spray cans and
composition notebooks,
watching the streets
for police cars, watching
the news for our
brothers, building
a revolution
with a brush and a
song.
